Why Hive is gratuity-free

The roots of Hive + Co’s gratuity-free philosophy began in April 2016. While living in Singapore, I took my first solo vacation to Japan to experience Tokyo during cherry blossom season. I hired a local walking guide, and by the end of our day together, a stranger had become a friend. She invited me to return that September, stay with her family, and attend sumo wrestling with them. When I attempted to tip her, she gently declined. Tipping was not customary, she explained, and she took great pride in a job well done. More importantly, we were now friends, and accepting a tip would feel insulting to the friendship we had formed.

Her words stayed with me and resonated deeply with my experience as a nurse. In healthcare, care is provided as a professional responsibility; patients are not expected to determine a provider’s value through a gratuity. I believe every Hive team member deserves that same professional recognition. Their education, expertise, time, and care should be reflected in their compensation, not left to subjective discretion at the end of an appointment.
That belief helped shape Hive + Co’s gratuity-free culture. Our prices are intentionally designed to reflect the full value of our team’s work, allowing guests to simply relax and enjoy their experience without awkward calculations or unspoken expectations. The price you see is the price you pay, no gratuity added or expected.
